I thought this was an exaggeration. Margaret Atwood in her feud against Rob Ford became a little of a self-parody. Her determination to discredit him by reminding people that he would lower arts funding and generally thought that artists are a leech on society, while valid, was a little too oft repeated. But, turns out she was totally right to be worried. Toronto has $19 per capita in arts funding, compared to $55 in Montreal and $42 in Calgary. This city, that is supposedly one of the great hubs of our nation, provides less funding to the arts than the most conservative major city in Canada. That’s like losing a interpretative dance competition to a dementor. If anyone is insulted that I just compared Calgary to a soul sucking monster commonly used to dive prisoners into such depression that suicide requires too much effort, don’t take it personally. Just try to elect a different party for a change.

As a Calgarian, I can attest to our dementor-like nature when it comes to the arts. But honestly, Nenshi is doing a lot...
